Basic to Advanced Obedience
 We here at Northstar Canine Consulting believe every dog should have the benefit of obedience training to keep them safe, happy, and bonded to us. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a dog like Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, or Eddie from TV’s Frasier? Obedience is the key to unlocking your dog’s potential by establishing a line of communication between you and your pet. As that line of communication grows, you will develop a better understanding of your dog, as he will you. Obedience also gives your dog more confidence and allows him to learn faster. Obedience is the foundation to everything in dog training from agility or protection, to Search and Rescue, or just fetching a can of Coke from the fridge.
Puppy Class
For pups 8 weeks - 6 months old
O.k., you’ve just brought home that cute little bundle of joy… so what do you do now? Most people want their new pup to live in the house with them, but if they don’t know how to properly house train their dog, it ends up living a lonely life outside.
We here at Northstar Canine Consulting believe every dog should have the opportunity to spend time with his family, so why not start out early with training that will get your pup started in the right direction? We will cover how dogs learn, house training, mouthing, jumping up, sit, down, stand, attention, recalls, and clickers. In addition, we will also instruct you on proper socialization of your puppy, basic care such as how to clip nails, brushing, cleaning ears, and how to get your pup to actually look forward to the vet’s exam table.

Basic Obedience
For dogs 8 months old and up
Ever had to put your dog up because a guest came over? Is it a hassle to walk your dog on a leash because of his pulling? Does your dog finally come to you when you called him for the fifteenth time and only then because he knew you meant it? If you answered “yes” to any of this, then basic obedience can help.
We will cover how dogs learn, clicker, basic behavior modification (jumping up, mouthing, etc.), attention getting, walking on a loose leash, sit, down, place, stays, heeling, come when called, and sitting politely at doors.

CGC (Canine Good Citizen)
You’ve done some really good work with your dog and would like for other people to know just how special he is without having to get into the competitive circuit with him. Maybe you just want to be able to go places with your dog and have people admire how well behaved he is. The AKC has something you might be intrested in; the Canine Good Citizen certificate.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) started the Canine Good Citizen program in 1989 as a certification program designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in their community. The CGC Program is a program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs six months old or older who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.
Northstar Canine Consulting, can help you train for this test. Your dog will have to pass all ten of the following exercises in order to receive the certificate.
- Accepting a friendly stranger
- Sitting politely for petting
- Appearance and grooming
- Out for a walk
- Walking through a crowd
- Sit & Down on command / staying in place
- Coming when called
- Reaction to another dog
- Reaction to distraction
- Supervised seperation

Intermediate Obedience
For dogs 6 months old and up
O.K. you’ve found out how much fun it is to train and work with your dog, and you want to keep going. Maybe you want to compete, maybe you want to strengthen what you’ve learned, or maybe you just enjoy the interaction with your dog.
Intermediate obedience is what we can do to advance your dog’s level of training by strengthening what your dog learned at the basic level with off leash work in mind. We will also cover exercises such as stand, finish, as well as some motion exercises.

AKC Obedience CD
For dogs 6 months old and up
You and your dog are doing great. You’ve done basic and intermediate obedience work but you still want to keep going. Maybe you want to compete.
This class is for people who want advanced obedience skills with their dog. We will cover exercises from the AKC Companion Dog:
- Heel on leash and figure 8
- Stand for examination
- Heel free
- Recall
- 1 minute sit stay
- 3 minute down stay

AKC Obedience CDX
For dogs 6 months old and up
This class is for people who want advanced obedience skills with their dog. We will cover exercises from the AKC Companion Dog:
- Heel free and figure 8
- Drop on recall
- Retrieve on flat
- retrieve over high jumps
- Broad jump
- 3 minute sit stay (out of sight)
- 5 minute down stay (out of sight)

AKC Obedience UD
For dogs 12 months old and up
This class is for people who want advanced obedience skills with their dog. We will cover exercises from the AKC Companion Dog:
- Signal exercise
- Scent discrimination
- Directed Retrieve
- Moving stand and evaluation
- Directed jumping

Clicker Class
Many people out there do not want to use any type of “negative” training techniques on their dog at all. And some people want a more positive approach to their more conventional leash type training. Some people have just heard about how powerful a clicker can be as a training tool, but are still unclear on how to use it effectively.
Northstar Canine Consulting can teach you how powerful a clicker can really be, by instructing you in its proper use. We’ll teach you how to clicker condition your dog and train him by capturing, shaping, luring, and changing behaviors.
You’ll be amazed at how quickly your dog can learn using this tool.
