Scent Detection
A detection dog is a dog that is used to find the specific scents it was trained for such as drugs, weapons, accelerants, termites, molds, fungi, and anything else that has a scent. These dogs are also trained to give either an active or a passive alert when the desired scent has been found so that the handler as well as observers are quite clear on whether or not the dog has made a find.
Although the techniques used to train for different types of scent detection are similar, they are not exactly the same. For example, you wouldn’t want to train an explosives dog to scratch out his alert like a narcotics dog might. But the steps to train for both sets of scents are very similar.
Something to keep in mind though is that it is very unwise to train one dog on two different scent disciplines such as narcotics and explosives. Eventually that narcotics alert will get an explosive end to a career.
